''The inn is packed near to full, but few people are talking. Most sit with their eyes down at their food or drinks. A pair of bards sit in one corner playing their instruments. You enter unnoticed.''

It's dark and drizzling and cold as the grave when you finally arrive inthe town of Tiris Tiraeme, not that you think it'd look more impressive were it bright daytime. Another sleep town of wood and stone hardly distinguishable from any other across Gadgya.
Until it wasn't, that is.
The streets are empty, and very few houses have lights in their windows. However one buildingi s a beacon of light, noise, and as you approach, warmth. Wood and brick walls with a sloped thatch roof, it's the size of at least three barns by your estimate. A signpost nearby says //Cat's Tail Inn.//

A wide river separates the town's heart from the wild fields to its east. The bridge over it is large, made of faded white stone. A relic of Rhom Rasha's empire, you know, as sturdy as it was over two millenia ago.
A ragged tent sits at its base. Light is visible from between the flaps. As you approach, a hunched figure emerges and ambles into your path.
"Halt traveler!" The person says. They pull down the hood of theri cloak, revealing an old and weathered face with a patchy beard. "That way lies danger. I urge you to turn around."

//Well, too late now I suppose.// Sighing, you unfasten the strings of your cloak, then hold it open to reveal your pristine frock coat underneath. Black velvet dark as the night, with white buttons and filligree spun from goldenthread. Even in the dark, it shines like fire.
"What in the gods' good name?" The man says. He takes a nervous step back.

He considers this for another, longer moment. "Dunno. Doesn't seem worth the risk."
"I'd think everything I mentioned is worth it. And imagine the name you'd make for yourself by rescuing the Princess! What is your name anyway?"
"Lynd."
"Lynd the Hero. The Daemonslayer. He who saved the Princess from grave peril."
"And the Prince."
"Yes, but I doubt the Prince will want it recorded in the annals that he needed to be rescued like a damsel. And saving a Princess is so romantic, don't you think?"
"I 'spose to your Gadgyans. Where I come from Princesses don't have much a good reputation no more."
"And where would that be?"
"Cercedeon. Bit west of Gadgya, heard of it by chance?"
"I have." //Been there too. I've a hunch I know what he's talking about.// "A place of great warriors and heroes."
He snorts. "Sure."
"Anyways, what say you, great adventurer?"

"Well... I'm what's called a mage." You answer. //The Conclave isn't going to like me being so open about this. But the people won't trust I'm here to help unless I'm honest.// "As in-"
"I know what a mage is. Sorc'rers and spellcasters." The innkeeper says gruffly, setting down the glass he's cleaning. "Explains why Lord Gherring's man oveer there's givin you the bad eye. No disrespect, but I'd rather not have any of that business in mine. Gonna have to ask you to leave my inn, please."
"I've no intentions of causing trouble."
"Either way you will though. Always happens. Don't matter who starts it. Gonna have to insist, ser."
The force in his voice tells you that there'll be no arguing. You bow your head and accede to his wishes.

"Discretion." You reply.
The innkeeper sets down his glass. You get the impression he doesn't fully buy it. Then he shrugs.
"Well, a King's man is a King's man. My services are yours as you wish ser. Still recommend you just lie low for a bit. We get some women coming in ever few nights looking for work, if you know what I mean."
"I can infer." You say, face reddening under your hood. "Perhaps another time. I won't be in here for long, just to catch my breath before moving on."
The innkeeper sighs. "Well, suit yourself ser. It's your skin, not mine. Feel free to order some food 'fore you go. Would hate for your coin to go to waste collecting dust in the Cathedral. My wife's got her beef stew cooking, real delicacy 'round here."
You chuckle. "I'll consider it. Good evening for now though."

"You scared to go down that Cathedral by your lonesome, aren't you?" He waggles his eyebrows at you.
"Well, I wouldn't say that."
"Cuz you don't wanna admit it."
You try to speak but he holds up a hand. "No shame in that though. I'm not one of them fools who thinks its cowardly to admit you're afraid of something. Though things'd be quicker here if you were out with it."
"Fine." You say. "You judge me right."
"Tell you what." He sets his hand down on top of the deck of cards. "I'll make this simple now. Guess what card's up on the top of this deck, greater than five or less than five. Guess right and I'll come with ya."
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"Putting yourself inthe arms of chance like that, how brave of you. You'll be an ideal compaion for me on this mission."
"Only if you guess right. So go on then, make your choice."

You grin. "That's luck sometimes."
"Well, I'm a man of my word. Unfortunately." He raises his glass. "MY bow is yours, 'til death do you in."
"Glad to hear it. We'll leave in a short while. I'll let you finish your supper."
"Might want to order some yourself. Bad to go in to who knows what on an empty stomach."

"No need to fear." You say.

The man raises his eyebrows. "Whadya mean?"
"Our friend here's a special King's man." Lynd says. "Real fancylad type."
"Thank you, Lynd." //Curse my quick tongue.// The Conclave's instructions were clear, keep a low profile, don't reveal yourself. //Well, too late now I suppose.// Sighing, you unfasten the strings of your cloak, then hold it open to reveal your pristine frock coat underneath. Black velvet dark as the night, with white buttons and filligree spun from goldenthread. Even in the dark, it shines like fire.

Lynd whistles. "Well I'll be. That what they wear in fancyland?"
"What in the gods' good name?" The man says. He takes a nervous step back.

"My name is Ceorvyd Fosh. I'm a mage, and I've been sent here to vanquish the daemons infesting the cathedral and bring back the [[Prince and Princess]]." //Assuming they're still alive.//
